October is Seafood Month, and here in Maine, we’re celebrating the best way we know how—by highlighting local seafood and the businesses that bring it to your table. Since 1978 Ducktrap has been crafting premium smoked seafood that represents the rich flavors of our region while supporting the hardworking people behind it all.

From Humble Beginnings to a Beloved Brand

Ducktrap’s story started in a small trout farm along the Ducktrap River. In the early days, farming fish came with plenty of hurdles, with wildlife constantly threatening to undo the hard work put in by founder Des Fitzgerald. But after experimenting with smoking some of his trout, Des tapped into something truly special.

Armed with a handmade smoker and a determination to do things right, he began sharing his smoked trout with local markets. Before long, it wasn’t just the taste that drew people in, but the story behind it: a product born from local waters and perfected through dedication and craft.

As word spread, Des expanded his smokehouse from a tiny operation to a larger facility that allowed him to explore new products, like smoked mussels and salmon. What started as a small local endeavor is now a nationally recognized brand. Yet, despite the growth, Ducktrap’s commitment to quality and community has never wavered.

Every piece of seafood we produce carries Maine’s proud four-decade tradition, thanks to our careful process and dedication to doing things right.Today, Ducktrap employs over 100 people in our smokehouse in Belfast, Maine, and our products reach customers across the United States—but it’s still that small-town ethos that guides what we do.
